เรื่องนี้เชื่อว่าทุกคนเรียนกันมาแล้ว อาจไม่ใช่เรื่องยากนัก แต่ก็ขอหยิบมาปัดฝุ่นกันเสียหน่อย
- นามนับได้ หรือ count nouns
- ก็คือคำนามที่เติม s ได้ เมื่อมีจำนวนมากกว่า 1 เช่น many bottles, few bottles, five chairs
- สามารถใช้ได้ทั้งกับ definite และ indefinite articles—a, an, the
- นามนับได้เอกพจน์สามารถใช้ตามหลัง this, that และ every, each, either, และ neither ได้
- นามนับได้พหูพจน์สามารถใช้ตามหลัง these, those, some, any, enough, number of หรือ zero article (ไม่มี article) เลยก็ได้
นามนับไม่ได้ หรือ non-count nouns นั้นเรียกอีกแบบคือ mass noun
คำในตารางข้างบนนี้เป็นนามนับไม่ได้และไม่สามารถเติม s ได้ แต่ก็มีข้อยกเว้นในบางกรณีที่ต้องการสื่อถึงชนิดหรือประเภทของสิ่งนั้น ดังตัวอย่างต่อไปนี้
- นามนับไม่ได้ใช้กับ much, little, a little
- นามนับไม่ได้ใช้กับ definite หรือ indefinite article ก็ได้ เช่น the sunshine, an experience, a wine
แต่โดยมากมักใช้กับ zero article หรือไม่มี article นำหน้าเลย
- นามนับไม่ได้ตามหลัง some, any, enough, this, that, much, amount of
