Present Tense

Present Perfect

กริยา to be นั้นเป็นกริยาที่เราต้องใช้บ่อย และมันก็สามารถแปลงกายได้หลายรูปแบบมากที่สุดในภาษาอังกฤษเสียด้วย ลองมาดูว่าเราจะสามารถเจอ be ในแบบไหนได้บ้าง 

Simple Yes/No Questions 
ในประโยคคำถาม เราจะเห็นว่ามีการสลับตำแหน่งระหว่างกริยา be และประธาน

• Is your sister shorter than you?
• Am I asking you too much?
• Were they shocked by what they saw?

The Linking and Existential “To Be” 

กริยา to be นั้นมักใช้ควบคู่กันกับกริยาอื่น เช่น 

• He is playing golf.
• She will be leaving soon.

บางที to be ก็อยู่โดดเดี่ยวได้ในเวลาที่เราตอบคำถามแบบสั้นๆ เช่น

• “Who’s going to the market with me?”   “I am.”
• “Who’s responsible for cooking?”  “She is.”

หรือบางทีอาจมีกริยาช่วยเข้ามาเพิ่มหน้าคำตอบที่เป็นกริยา to be

• “Is Megan in her room?   “Well, she might be.”
• “Is anyone helping her?”  “I’m not sure. Her father could be.”

กริยา to be ยังถูกใช้เป็น linking verb เชื่อมประธานของประโยคกับส่วนขยายประธานหรือส่วนขยายที่เป็น adjective ในการใช้ลักษณะนี้ to be จะเป็นแค่ตัวเชื่อม ไม่มีส่วนในการกระทำหรือบ่งบอกกริยาใดในประโยค เพราะส่วนขยายประธานทำหน้าที่ให้ข้อมูลเพิ่มเติมเกี่ยวกับประธาน และส่วนขยายที่เป็น adjective ก็รับหน้าที่ขยายประธานไปเช่นเดียวกัน

• Obama is the 44th President of the United States.
• Our trip to Thailand was incredible!
