Historic Places & Temples

Grand Palace & Wat Phra Kaeo
Location: Na Phralan Rd.
Constructed after King Rama I of the Chakri Dynasty ascended the throne in 1782, the Grand Palace has become the landmark of the Rattanakosin Island since then.  The palace consists of several striking buildings with different styles of architecture.  At present, several royal ceremonies and state functions are held there. Located within the Grand Palace’s wall, Wat Phra Kaeo is recognized as the most beautiful and important temple in Thailand. It houses the most highly revered Emerald Buddha image and boasts numerous interesting things such as sculptures of artistic value, mural paintings, etc. The most distinctive feature of this temple is that there are no monks. The Grand Palace is a large compound located near Sanam Luang in Bangkok old town.

Wat Arun (The Temple of Dawn)
Location: Arun Amarin Rd.
Wat Arun is the most prominent feature on the Thonburi west bank of the Chao Phraya River. The best view of it can be seen from the east bank of the river at sunset. The temple can be reached by boat and features a very good view of the river from the high level of the tallest pagoda. The tallest one is 82 m high which is equal to a 20-storey building. Visitors can climb up, but not to the highest level. Apart from the beautiful scenery, this 17th century temple is famed for its extraordinary prangs (pagoda) which are adorned with millions of pieces of Chinese porcelain.

Wat Pho (The Temple of the Reclining Buddha)
Location: Chetuphon Rd. (next to the Grand Palace on the south side)
The temple is best known for its huge Reclining Buddha image (46 m long and 15 m high). It also has the largest number of pagodas in the city (95 in all). The four colossal ones, in which the royal ashes are kept, are of the first four Kings of the Chakri Dynasty. In 2011, this temple has received the Unesco Memory of the World award as it has a unique collection of stone inscriptions and scripts representing a wide range of knowledge, especially of those in the medical field. Wat Pho is also famous among tourists for its Thai Traditional Massage School.

Marble Temple (Wat Benchamabophit)
Location: Si Ayutthaya Rd., near Chitrada Palace
The Marble Temple or Wat Benchamabophit is built by the order of King Rama V. With its graceful and tranquil white marble ordination hall, this is one of the most stunning temples in the country. The presiding Buddha image “Phra Phuttha Chinnarat” is enshrined inside the striking hall. In addition, other constructions in the compound are as beautiful and worth a visit.
